those of our ancestors?' - Cicero

My name is Sheila Fermor Clarkson and as a member of the Guild of One-Name Studies, I research my maiden name of FERMOR world-wide.

There is speculation that the origin of FERMOR was from the French fermier or farmer, or from the Old English fermor - collector of taxes.

To date, although we have traced FERMORs in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, New Zealand, Peru, Russia, South Africa and the United States of America, the majority still live in Kent and Sussex where some of the earliest records of the name FERMOR were found.

On 23 July 1994,
at the invitation of Headteacher, Graham Johnson, we held our first Fermor Family Reunion at Sir Henry Fermor School, Crowborough, East Sussex to celebrate the school's 250th Anniversary.

We then held a Fermor Family Reunion in 1997 and one in 2000 issuing a small commemorative coaster bearing the Fermor arms with reference to Sir Henry Fermor School and this reunion on the reverse (see photo below - size 12cm in diameter). A few are still available, so please e-mail me if you would like to buy one.

Contributions of Fermor news and photos for publication on this website will be much appreciated.

If you have time, browse the archives on www.gazettes-online.co.uk for FERMOR references - the earliest I've found so far is 1742 in connection with Count William Fermor.

Try a Google search for FERMOR and then select Options/Timeline for references before the 16th Century.
